KOALAS AT O'CARROLLYNS, ONE MILE BEACH

Koalas share their backyard with us. O'Carrollyns takes great care not to disturb them on the property.

Residents and guests are privileged to be amongst one of the most significant koala populations in New South Wales at O'Carrollyns and the local area.

However, we must protect their habitat to ensure their future here.

Since European settlement in Port Stephens, land clearing for urban development, agriculture, mining and other purposes has destroyed 75% of original koala habitat. The result of this development is the Koala habitat becoming more and more scarce and fragmented.

O'Carrollyns property was once cleared. A remnant melaleuca forest was still on the site at the commencement of construction in 2000. Since then, a huge variety of eucalypts as recommended by the Native Animal Trust Fund have been planted.

O'Carrollyns was once a koala corridor but is now a "Koala Habitat". We have created and continue to maintain a situation where the koalas are happy to stay and the guests can learn a great deal more about this unique Australian Icon "in the wild".

There are a number of familiar Koalas around O'Carrollyns. Koala Chloe was orphaned at a young age and raised by carers from the Native Animal Trust Fund. She was released 'into the wild' on our streets.

Koala Robbie's mother was killed on a local road when he was a tiny infant. He was released on Eucalyptus Drive and has since made his way to O'Carrollyns.

Koala Chris was King of O'Carrollyns and surrounds for many years. One of his many favourite trees is the Eucalyptus Tereticornis or better known as the "forest red gum". And last but not least, Koala Blue, is renown for liking a good fight.

O'Carrollyns can never guarantee a koala sighting
but can guarantee a koala experience.
