O'CARROLLYNS BIG ROCKY TOUR
Big Rocky (or Rocky Point to others) is an island just north of Samurai Beach and was the site of shell grit mining from the 1930's until just a few years ago. Swimming and fishing are good. Simply a stunning location all year round because of its isolation and ruggedness.
There are a number of interesting things to see along the track to the Point, including:
A tree with a branch joining back into the trunk again. |
Scrubby coastal heath land with an abundance of wild flowers in spring. |
Carpets of flannel flowers through summer. |
Greenhood and pixie cap orchids in the winter. |
Plus there is the ‘Cycad’ the worlds oldest know fern dating back as far as the dinosaur age. |
The remains of a winch can still be seen and the supports of a flying fox once used to carry shell grit from the island. |
Swimming at Big Rocky:
Rocky Cauldron is a natural saltwater spa that makes a great swimming hole. If you stand beside the winch and look towards the island, Rocky Cauldron is about half way. A surge shaped hole in the rocks with a course sandy bottom, the spa effect is at its best when the tide is about 1m. At low tide it is a bit tame. At high tide with a bit of a swell running it can be more than boisterous.
If you fancy a swim there are few more (high tide) swimming possibilities within the next 500m around the rocks westwards towards Samurai Beach.
